Uh, RUDE.
I’m aware that they are just cartoons but the writing in this confession rubbed me the wrong way. This isn’t about Disney, this is about body peace, so just ignore the background of the picture and pay attention to the words.
“They need some meat on them before they get snapped in half.” How is saying something like that not the same as a thin girl telling a curvy girl to “lay off the cheeseburgers” or something equally hurtful?
Just like there are people who are genetically inclined toward being overweight, there are people who are genetically inclined to be underweight, but that issue is often ignored because everyone, as my psych professor put it, “everyone wants to kill that person who wants to gain weight instead of lose it.”
Everyone has body issues. Even the most confident people have days where they just feel off, or features they dislike. Saying things like this is not helpful at all. We’re all supposed to be on the same team here! It’s not Team Curvy vs Team Slender. We’re all people, we all have our own issues, and you need to think before you speak. We need to help each other and try to understand and not put down each other’s issues. Only then will we truly see a widespread body peace movement.
That being said, and my feelings toward this confession aside, I would LOVE to see some curvier Disney ladies! All of us have different body types and I would love to see all of those body types being recognized for the lovely shapes they are, and a good representation that all body types are beautiful!
As the recent Bare Minerals ad campaign goes, “Pretty is what you are. Beauty is what you do with it.” The whole point of the Disney princesses is to show that everyone has the power to change their life and achieve their dreams, no matter what background they come from. They’re pretty, yes, but that’s not what makes them great, or likable. No one likes a pretty bitch. The villains are pretty but they’re still evil. The princesses are good role models not because they’re pretty, but because they have overcome obstacles to achieve their dreams, shown bravery in the most terrifying of circumstances, and achieved all that they have through kindness, grace, and love.
